Speaker: Karen Szubinski has been a committed advocate for the needs of survivors for over 10 years and her actions continue to influence attitudes, policies and practices in victim services.
After retiring from the New York City Police Department and moving to upstate New York, she served as the sexual assault coordinator in both Schoharie and Saratoga counties. During this time she provided direct services to victims/survivors of sexual violence, providing outreach and community education on issues impacting unserved and underserved communities, and coordinated training opportunities and for victim advocates and professionals in her catchment area.
Ms. Szubinski has been instrumental in creating SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) programs and SART (Sexual Assault Response Teams) teams to provide a coordinated, efficient, and supportive response to victims. She is also an active community volunteer for a local rape crisis center, serves on the Board of Directors for the Capital District Coalition for Crime Victims’ Rights and has organized numerous community activities associated with Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
Karen Szubinski is currently the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator for the United States Navy, and acts as the single point of contact for the military on issues relating to this crime.
