"The Cookout" series was launched in February by Ujima: The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community. The series is dedicated to centering the needs of Black advocates across the country. This conversation based series will include quarterly events dedicated to uplifting the voices of Black advocates as we discuss a range of topics from mental health, to intergenerational dynamics, to authenticity in the work and more. Ujima will publicize a resource each month that will highlight different modalities towards mindfulness, wellness and healing and encourage advocates to share their insights and connections as well.
This cookout will highlight the necessity of intergenerational conversations and set the table for brave and transparent conversations about the role of respectability politics in the Black community. With this conversation, we hope to explore intergenerational dynamics, misunderstandings, expectations, and harm caused by respectability politics.
This is an informal space for sharing and the conversation will not be recorded. There will be no reports or summaries shared, and everything shared during the cookout will remain in that space.
