August is International Overdose (OD) Awareness Month. VOCAL-NY's Albany Chapter will be holding a variety of OD Prevention trainings throughout the month. All are welcome! Join us on Wednesday, August 14th @ 5:30 PM for a Naloxone/Narcan and Overdose Prevention Training. We all can arm ourselves with a public health safety tool to keep ourselves, loved ones, and members of our community alive. We will cover the following....
- Risk factors for opioid-induced overdoses
- Why and how overdoses occur in the body and brain
- What naloxone/Narcan is and how it works to reverse opioid-induced ODs
- How to recognize/identify a potential overdose
- Learn what the recovery position is & how (& when) to put someone into it
- How to know when & when not to use naloxone/Narcan
- How to administer naloxone (intramuscular or intranasal) & call 911
- Good Samaritan Law *will be covered in great detail so people can feel safe calling 911 - or know what to do for safety if you can't call*
- Learn rescue breathing
- Learn how to take care of your kit/carry it safely, and what to do when your kit expires or in case you use a dose
- After/Follow-up care for people who have been revived from an overdose
- Get a naloxone/Narcan kit & learn about local harm reduction services & the N-CAP program that can help people get kits for lower to no price
- Q&A about overdose & OD prevention
