Policymakers and Advocates - Take Action to Promote Comprehensive Legislation to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse in Your State
The National Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation is teaming up with MassKids/Enough Abuse and Prevent Child Abuse America to host a free three-part Webinar Series to assist Coalition members and their networks in legislative advocacy efforts to prevent child sexual abuse. The series is a follow up to the release in June of “A Call to Action for Policymakers and Advocates: Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Legislation in the States,” a report developed by MassKids/Enough Abuse in collaboration with Prevent Child Abuse America and endorsed by the National Coalition.
The 90-minute webinars will be held on three consecutive Tuesdays in November:
Part I: Policymakers and Advocates - An Overview of State Legislative Efforts to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse in Schools and Youth Organizations
November 2nd, 2pm EST/11am PST
The first webinar will provide an overview of the 116-page report and the status of five types of legislation currently being enacted by states. These include: child sexual abuse prevention education in schools; standardized screening of prospective employees to reduce the risks of sexual misconduct and abuse; sexual misconduct laws that target abuse by school employees and persons in positions of authority; student safety poster laws for schools; and laws that establish state task forces to address child sexual abuse.
Part II: Policymakers and Advocates - Promote Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education in Schools and Youth Organizations
November 9th, 2pm EST/11am PST
The second webinar will focus uniquely on state laws that mandate or encourage child sexual abuse prevention education in schools with a focus on the various provisions MassKids and Prevent Child Abuse America recommend to improve the comprehensiveness of such laws. This interactive session will welcome comments and questions from child advocates and legislators seeking to introduce or improve these laws in their states.
Part III: Policymakers and Advocates - Strengthen Screening Policies in Schools and Youth Organizations
November 16th, 2pm EST/11am PST
The third webinar will focus on laws related to: standardizing protocols for screening applicants for positions in schools, prohibiting the practice of aiding an employee engaged in sexual misconduct from securing a position in another school, and addressing how to close Age of Consent loopholes that are currently protecting child sexual abusers from legal consequences. Again, this interactive exchange will encourage advocates and legislators to brainstorm on how they can achieve adoption of comprehensive prevention policies in their schools.
